New York State Championship Meet Wrap-Up

Day 2 of the meet is actually Day 1 the only day of the meet this year (6/08/13)
Despite what is traditionally a two-day meet being fit into one day due to inclement weather, the Trojan team had an excellent showing at this year's New York State Tack and Field Championship held at Middletown High School. With seven student-athletes competing in four events, this contingent of Trojans was the largest in nearly ten years to head to the state meet. Not surprisingly, seniors Brian Smith and Keith Pease concluded their Trojan careers with some amazing feats on the track.

Senior Brian Smith honored as Section Vs Sportsman of the Year for Track and Field (6/08/13)
Smith wins the 200m race for his third state title in 21.31 (6/08/13)

Though not necessarily a picture-perfect lean, highly effective nonetheless (6/08/13)
Two years after winning the 200m title, Smith has scoreboard again. (6/08/13)
On the podium for the 200 meter title. (6/08/13)
Appropriately, teammate John Hampton is there for this final high school title. (6/08/13)

Pease goes out with an incredibly fast heat in the 1600 meter run. (6/08/13)

Finishing an amazing high school career with a record breaking run. (6/08/13)
Pease breaks his own school record with a PR in his last race. (6/08/13)
Pease earns third place in the New York State Division 1 race. (6/08/13)

Class AA Sectional Championships Wrap-Up

Photo by Ron Kalasinskis at www.rochesterforkids.com
The Greece Athena/Odyssey Track and Field Teams kicked off the long Memorial Day weekend by competing in the Class AA Sectional Championships held at Penfield High School. Both Girls and Boys teams had many student-athletes competing in a wide array of events ranging, a tribute to the hard work of coaches and students throughout the season. Trojan Track continued to distinguish itself with a number of excellent performances... and a few Sectional titles, too!
  • Athena senior Brian Smith added three more individual Section V titles to his collection, easily winning the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes!
  • Athena senior Katie Fisher won the Girls High Jump!
  • Odyssey junior Victoire Kothor continued her dominance in the throwing events winning BOTH the Shot and Discus events to claim two titles!
The Boys team finished second overall behind defending Class AA Champions Rush-Henrietta. The second place team finish improves upon last year's third place and concludes a tremendous journey toward success for a number of key student-athletes who will be graduating this year. This Friday, those who qualified for the Meet of Champions to determine who represents Section V at the state meet will run at Waterloo High School on Friday afternoon.

Varsity & JV Counties Wrap-Up

Though this past weekend saw the official conclusion of league competition with Thursday's Monroe County League JV Championship meets and yesterday's League Championship at Hilton, there is still more running, jumping and throwing inn Greece Athena's future. Much was accomplished this past week in terms of performances that set us up well for the next few weeks... and beyond.

On Thursday, the Junior Varsity squads split by gender to travel to two separate locations: the Girls team head out to Webster Thomas while the Boys traveled to East Irondequoit Eastridge. Just a few of the FANTASTIC performances turned in by both JV teams included:
  • Athena Eighth grader Amy Titus ran a spectacular Girls 1500 meter race to place 5th overall against very strong competition!
  • Athena Sophomore Ke'on Peterkin placed 5th in the the Boys Long Jump and 6th in the Boys Triple Jump. Ke'on had also previously qualified for the High Jump in next week's Sectional meet!
  • Athena Sophomore Bradley Haag also reasserted himself on the team depth chart by throwing the Discus a whopping 99-04.00; the best performance by a Trojan thrower this season!
  • Odyssey junior Christan Devlin and Athena junior Robert Reed both recorded personal records (PRs) in the 1600 meter run.
  • Athena junior Cameron Gross and freshman Alex Diaz both ran PRs in very competitive 400 meter heats!
Saturday's Varsity Championship Meet gave the Trojans another chance to demonstrate their resolve and tenacity with some record setting and state leading performances. Individuals placing first to fourth earned first Team All League honors. Those finishing fifth through eighth made the second team:
  • Athena senior Brian Smith ran a PR of 21.16 in the 200 meter dash. Brian's 200 meter time now stands as the best in New York State. Brian also handily won the 100 meter dash and anchored the Trojans to a third place finish in the 4 x 100m relay during which he made up almost 20 meters in the 100 meter anchor leg!
  • Athena senior Keith Pease broke the school record and solidified himself as one of the areas very best milers in winning the Boys 1600 meter run in a Section V leading 4:14.37! Odyssey senior James Anderson also put forth a season best effort of 4:47.03 by taking almost 10 seconds off of his previous best effort!
  • Odyssey senior Victorin Kothor continued the road back from a hamstring injury with a season best jump of  20-08.25--good enough for a 3rd place finish!
  • Athena senior Tommy Love II continues a late season push with a 2nd place finish in the 400 meter Intermediate Hurdles and a 3rd place finish in the 110 meter High Hurdles! Tommy posted a PR in the 110m HH of 15.69, moving him into the event's top 10 on the Section V Leader board!
  • Odyssey junior Victoire Kothor won the Girls Shot Put with a solid throw of 39.07! Her throw of 41-01.00 from earlier this season remains the best in Section V. Victoire also finished 4th in the Girls Discus!
  • Athena senior Katie Fisher tied for 3rd place in the Girls High Jump!
  • Odyssey senior Jessica Marlowe placed 4th overall in the Girls 200 meter dash, earning Second Team All League honors! Jessica is now seeded eighth in Class AA for next week's Sectional Championships!
  • Odyssey senior Katie Wilbur placed 4th in the Girls Triple Jump with a jump of 34-02.50!
  • Odyssey sophomore Calvary Rogers continued to impress by placing 5th in the Boys 400 meter dash. Calvary also ran a very solid leg on the 3rd place Boys 4 x100 meter relay!
  • Athena sophomore Tommy Kolaniewicz finished 9th overall in the 3200 meter run by shaving nearly 20 seconds off his previous season best!
The Boys team finished third overall behind defensing League Champions Olympia and perennial powerhouse Rush-Henrietta. The third place team finish improves upon last year's fourth place finish and continues a series of strong team performances. Next week many of these same athletes will be moving onto Sectional Class AA competition at Penfield High School on Saturday.

Catching Up with Trojan Track

2013 Hilton Runnin' Cadet 4 x 400 meter Champions!
Sorry for the lack of recent updates, but the Athena Track and Field staff has been very busy running and participating in three meets in the six calendar days with a fourth to follow tomorrow at home. A quick recap show that Greece Athena has won the Division 3 Championship with a record of 4-0 after defeating both Churchville-Chili this past Thursday.

Last veening sat the 2013 Hilton Cadet, a number of Trojans walked away with medals and personal record (PR) performances:
  • Senior Brian Smith ran a Section V best 21.23 in the 200m dash, just missing the record of 20.7 seconds, set in 1971 by Gates Chili's Bill O'Connell. Smith returned later in the evening to easily win the seeded 100 meter dash in a meet record 10.86. Senior Treyvond Jones also  medaled, placing seventh overall.
  • Junior Victoire Kothor won the seeded Girls Shot Put with a throw of 40-08.00. Victoire is currently seeded number 1 in all of Section V with a season best of 41-01.00. Earlier in the day, Victoire also placed seventh in the Girls Discus Throw.
  • Odyssey freshman Megan Muscato ran a blazing 64.55 in the Girls 400 meter dash to place seventh overall in her first Hilton Runnin' Cadet Invite. Athena sophomore Janelle Handley also PR'd in the same heat coming in at 65.47.
  • Senior Gaby Hernandez ran a season best 5:11.13 in the 1500 meter run, following her first 2000 meter steeplechase of the year earlier in the day. She placed sixth overall in the steeplechase running an excellent  8:21.71.
  • Athena's hurdling duo of senior Tommy Love II and Alex Wiegand continue to have a tremendous season placing fifth and sixth respectively in the 110 meter hurdles finishing within thousandths of a second of one another! Both hurdlers also PR'd in the 400 meter Intermediate Hurdles placing third and fourth. Not surprisingly, both Tommy and Alex have  automatically qualified in both events for Class AA Sectional competition later this season.
  • For many, the Runnin' Cadet's highlight was the final event of the evening under the ligths. Going off at about 10:00 p.m. the 4x 400 meter relay consisted of two of the best teams in New York State competing with a tired Trojan relay consisting of Smith, Wiegand, Calvary Rogers and Keith Pease--who had (literally) minutes earlier finished the grueling Glavin 3200 meter run. Despite amazing competition and a long meet, the Trojans pulled out a win thanks to a breathtaking 400 meter anchor leg supplied by Brian Smith. The crowd audibly gasped when Brian caught Aquinas middle distance expert Josh Hannah on the back stretch and proceeded to pull away for the win. The Boys relay put together an amazing time of 3:26.59 overtaking Aquinas of the Section V leader board.
  • All official results for Saturday's invitational can be found here.
The Boys team has one meet remaining. Intended as "crossover" meet with Division 3 and 4 champions, this will not be the case, as Division 4 has yet to have a champion (co-leaders Arcadia and Olympia meet May 13). The outcome of tomorrow's "friendly" has no bearing on division championships, and as such will be used as an opportunity to let JV athletes compete in the events they are most capable of qualifying for country competition and give Varsity members the chance to run fresh in open events.

Athena Girls will run Wednesday at East Irondequoit Eastridge.

100 meter dash: Smith wins!

2013 His & Her Invite Wrap-Up

Updates in yellow.

From the "scorching" sun (as evidenced by my own brightly-hued nose) to the old-school methodology employed to communicate results (the timing and scoring "tech" went down mid meet), this year's His and Her Invitational was an "unusual" 8+ hour (!) experience for those Trojans who attended. Some very strong performances were turned in by both the Boys' and Girls' squads:
  • Senior Keith Pease ran way from the pack in winning the 1600 meter run in an impressive 4:20.08. Despite running alone for the final 200 meters, Pease pushed through the line to continue an undefeated streak in the event for this outdoor season. Pease was the 1600 meter Champion in the 2012-13 Indoor Track and Field season.
  • Senior Katie Fisher, competing in her first Pentathlon, had a strong debut in the series of challenging events. Katie started the day placing tenth of seventeen in the 100m hurdles and finished with a solid seventh place finish in the 800 meter run. It was in the middle events that Katie continued to excel (as she has in individual competition), tieing for first in the high jump (with eventual Girls' Pent winner Warsaw's Karmen Auble), and coming in third in the long jump. Katie also demonstrated some considerable range in placing seventh in the shot put. Katie placed an impressive sixth overall in the her first Girls Pentahlon with a score of 2035!
  • After false starting in the Boys' 100m finals earlier in the meet, senior Brian Smith (21.78) easily won the Men's 200 meter dash. The 2011 New York State Champion in the event, Brian took control of the race at the 100 meter point and cruised to a commanding finish.
  • Odyssey junior thrower Victoire Kothor followed up her first appearance on the Democrat and Chronicle's All-Greater Rochester team for her efforts this past indoor season by winning the Girls' Shot (38-00.00) in the first big invite of the outdoor season.
  • Odyssey sophomore Calvary Rogers (51.48) placed second overall in the Boys' 400m dash, bested only by Brockport's Denzel Knight (50.14). In placing second, Calvary earned his first t-shirt of the day. (Places first through third are awarded color coded t-shirts, while places 4 through 8 receive ribbons.) Junior captain Julio Santos (52.80) placed fifth in the same heat.
  • The Boys' 4 x 400m relay won the vent going away, beating runner-up Brighton by more than 6 seconds! The relay consisting of Smith, Rogers, Santos and Pease. Both relays (4 x 100m and 4 x 400m) were running together for the first time this season.
  • This year's new look Athena Boys' 4 x 100 meter relay, defending Section V Class AA Champions, consisting of Smith, fellow senior John Hampton, and juniors Santos and Alex Wiegand placed second (43.82) to a speedy East High (43.56) squad. Coming into the final leg, Hampton came off the curve to give Smith the stick nearly 20 meters behind East's anchor. Smith simply ran out of real estate barely missing an opportunity to catch East at the line for the win.
The His & Her meet is team scored with a merge score of both a school's Boys and Girls squads. The Athena/Odyssey Trojan Boys squad (54 total points) finished the meet in third place, only 9 points behind the team from Victor (63.5). The Athena/Odyssey Trojan Girls team added 19 points for a cumulative points total of 73, good for a 7th place overall finish!

This upcoming week will be a busy one for the teams as they compete in three meets over the next six days: Varsity division meets with Hilton and Churchville-Chili on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, and the Hilton Runnin' Cadet Invite on Saturday for select Varsity student-athletes.
