Meet 5 Highlights!

Friday evening, the Greece Athena Indoor Track and Field team made it's way to RIT Field House again to participate in the first Varsity only indoor meet of the season. With the Class B Sectional meet only one month away, while the competitive season is winding down for those who haven't met either a provisionally or automatically qualifying standard, those who have are intensifying their training in an effort to hit performance marks for good seeding and heat placement. All student athletes continue to aim for the personal records that show evidence of improvement throughout the season.

Highlights from RIT included:
  • Senior distance runner Keith Pease, only one week removed from hitting an elite time in the 1600m while breaking the school record in that event, Keith went back to the well for another school record breaking meet! In the individual 1000 meter run, Keith improved upon alumnus Ryan Kolb's 2002-03 time of 2:37.21, by going 2:33.93! But the record breaking string of performances were not over: in the final event for the Trojan's, Pease was part of the 4 x 400m Relay (which included Julio Santos, Terrance Harley and Brian Smith) that improved upon the school record of 3:36.23 (2005-06) by putting together a Section V leading 3:35.72!
  • Senior high jump specialist Katie Fisher added yet another event to her impressive repertoire by improving upon her automatically qualifying performance (14-01.00) in the long jump, going 15-03.50! Even more impressively, Friday night's jump was only the third time Katie had done so competitively!
  • Junior Faith Gruver hit a remarkable personal record (PR) in the first event of the evening, the girls' 3000 meter run. A challenging race consisting of 15 laps of RIT's 200 meter indoor track, Faith ran a disciplined set of 200 meter splits (43.3/45.5/45.7/46.9/47.4/47.2/48.07/46.9/47.6/48.5/48.4/48.8/47.5/47.9/46.4) to improve upon her previous indoor best of 12:11.6 with a Class B Sectionals automatic qualifying performance of 11:43.49!
On some level, it is expected of student-athlete's who receive recognition to do "great things," but the heart of Track and Field is the moment when those student-athlete's who diligently train without fanfare hit personal bests. The Athena Trojan's once again had many student-athletes do just that Friday evening.
  • Each of the following girls had personal record performances at RIT on Friday night: Susan Doan (55 and 300m), Claire Teal (300m),  Emilyn Nguyen (55m), Sarah Sotack (600m), Janelle Handley (1000m), Casey Pollack (Long Jump).

Congratulations, team!
