Rochester Relays Wrap-Up

Yesterday at the Class A/B Rochester Relay invitational at the RIT Field House, both Greece Athena Boys and Girls teams had some excellent performances which resulted in some excellent movement up (and in some cases back to the top of the) Section V leader boards. At this point in the Indoor Track and Field season, student-athletes are refining their skills in an effort to either qualify automatically for the Class B Sectional on Saturday, February 16, or improve upon their seedlings.

Highlights included:
  • Fueled by breakthrough performances from Seniors Tommy Love II and Chris Bond, and a very solid effort from junior Alex Wiegand, the boys hurdling squad combined to place first in the 55m Hurdle relay to start the meet of on a winning note! This was one of many unique events for which individual results from competitor's where combined to determine a "relay" champion.
  • Each member of the Girls distance squad PR'd in the 1500m run to place in the Girl's 1500m relay. Senior Gaby Hernandez improved upon her Class B Sectional automatically qualifying time by slicing nearly 10 seconds of her previous best to lead the girls. Sophomore Janelle Handley automatically qualified for the first time this season pulling nearly four seconds off  her previous best 1500 meter run. 3200m automatic qualifier junior Faith Gruver continued to show impressive range by improving upon her own provisional qualifying "mile" time.
  • Both senior John Hampton and junior Josh Dailey hit season best performances to combine and place in the Boys High Jump relay.
  • Juniors Kelsea Halloran and Sarena St. Louis made their 4x800m Relay debuts with Faith Gruver and Gaby Hernandez earlier in the evening, contributing to a solid showing against some excellent competition.
  • The Athena Boys sprint squad reasserted themselves in winning all relevant sprint relays. The 4x200m relay comprised on Juniors Julio Santos, Terrance Harley and seniors John Hampton and Brian Smith beat their closest competitors, Edison Tech, by almost 2.5 seconds. In the 4x400 meter relay, senior Keith Pease, who had earlier in the evening won the 3200m run, joined in on the fun to handle crosstown rival Greece Olympia, besting them by almost 15 meters. Both boys relays have now posted the top times this season in all of Section V.
