From the very first race, in which Athena junior and Girls team Captain Faith Gruver ran a sharp 11:49.29 in the Girls 3000m to the final relay of the night during which a Boys 4 x 200m Relay consisting of John Hampton, Josh Dailey, Julio Santos and Tommy Love II placed second to East High, the meet was a celebration of Trojan training. Many past Athena staff and graduates were on hand to cheer the Trojan's on.
Highlights (of which there were many) include:
- Seniors Keith Pease and Brian Smith each winning three Sectional Titles! Keith won both the individual 1000 and 1600 meters titles, while Brian (for the second straight year) earned first place patches in the 55 and 300 meter dashes. The pair teamed up with juniors Julio Santos and Alex Wiegand to win the 4 x 400 meter relay in a weekend best time of 3:32.40, less than half a second off their Section V best this season! There was a very nice article about Keith in the Sunday Democrat and Chronicle that is definitely worth picking up a copy.
- Senior Girls Team captain Katie Fisher finished 2nd by the smallest of margins (1"!) in the Girls High Jump after dueling Irondequoit's Joanna Heath. Katie also placed 6th in the Long Jump, thereby scoring in both individual events she participated in!
- Both hurdlers Tommy Love II (3rd place) and Alex Wiegand (6th) scored in the 55m hurdlers, further contributing to a strong team showing.
- The Girls 4 x 800m Relay (Faith Gruver, Gaby Hernandez, Sarah Sotack and Janelle Handley) took home ribbons for their 6th place finish in the Girls 4 x 800m Relay.
- All official results are availalbe here on YenTiming.
The Boys team finished second (65 points) overall, and the Girls team (14 points) tripled their points total from the previous year! For some student-athletes, our season is not over just yet: Friday's State Qualifiers meet will determine who moves on to represent Section V at the New York State Championship meet at the Cornell University in 2 weeks!
Trojan Pride!
