Double Meet Updates!

Yesterday was a busy one for Greece Athena Track and Field as the team was competing at two locations: while the majority of student-athletes were participating in a league meet at the NY Chiropractic College, select Varsity student-athletes travelled to Cornell for the Hurley-Quinney Invite (also the site of the March 3 NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet). Both sites featured solid performances by our student-athletes in a wide range of events.
Highlights included:
  • Junior Katie Fisher won the girl's high jump and in doing so broke the Greece Athena High School indoor high jump record by going 5'02"! The previous record of 5'00" had been shared by Helen Lee (1995-1996) and Heather Klimuszka (2006-07). Katie's previous best had been 4'10", and an improvement of 4 inches is significant! Katie has qualified automatically for Class A Sectionals and is seeded third in Class A Sectionals!
  • Junior Keith Pease won the 1600m run at the Hurley-Quinney Invite at Cornell by posting a season best of 4:24.61! The Hurley-Quinney was held on the New York State Championship track and Keith remains the top seed in ALL OF SECTION V in this event!
  • Sophomore Terrance Harley won the 55m dash, also at the Hurley-Quinney Invite at Cornell, by posting a season best of 6.55! Terrance, along with junior Brian Smith, continue to hold the top two passions in this event in ALL OF SECTION V. Brian also won the 300 meter dash nearly matching his Section V record time.
  • The following JV student-athletes concluded their indoor seasons by posting personal records: freshmen Susan Doan (600m) and Clair Teal (600m), sophomore Latricia Agee (600m), sophomores Cameron Gross (600m) and Jacob Latuik (Shot).
There remains only one Rochester Winter Track League meet between today and the Class A Sectional meet at RIT on Saturday, February 18. (There is also a "Field Event Only" meet that select student-athletes will be attending on Saturday, February 11.)

With the JV season now having concluded, those student-athletes are no longer expected at practice. I will continue to inform those who 1) do not need to practice and 2) have to turn in their uniforms, when I see them in school. JV student-athleets should however continue training independently in the time between the conlusion of this and the start of outdoor season. Greece Athena Track and Field practice is tentatively scheduled to begin March 12. There will be student informational meetings held in the week's leading up to that date.

League Meet Wrap-up

The 55 meter dash featuring Athena's Brian Smith and Terrance Harley.
Last night's meet at RIT was another in a tremendous string of Athena performances! Quite a few student-athletes put forth their best efforts last night, by either winning their event or moving up the Section V leaderboard. With our school principal in attendance, there were many fine performances had by the team. Among the standout efforts were:

  • Junior Katie Fisher matched her best jump of the season, a Section V automatic qualifying height of 4-10! This jump also propelled Katie to a WIN in the event!
  • Junior Keith Pease WON an extremely competitive 1600m run against some of the very best local competition including Gates-Chili's Travis Jordan and Rush-Henrietta's Mickey Burke. Keith's time positions him as the number one seed on the Sectional leaderboard.
  • Junior Gaby Hernandez ran a blistering 600m time to automatically qualify for Class Sectional competition in the event, taking nearly 3 seconds off of her previous best!
  • Junior Tommy Love and senior Sean Porrata joined the ranks of those Athena Trojans provisionally qualifying for the 300m dash in Sectional competition!
  • Senior Janae Dulaney posted season bests in both the 55 and 300 meter dashes. Janae has now provisionally qualified for Sectionals in the 55m dash!
Official meet results are available by clicking here. Next week, we are off to two separate locations. While the majority of our student-athletes will be heading to the NY Chiropractic College for a league Varsity/JV meet, a select group will be travelling to Cornell for an invitational at the site of the state championships meet.

Meet 8 Wrap-Up

Thanks to all who came to the meet yesterday--given our combined Odyssey and Athena forces (and bus), we needed all hands on deck, and in the end it work out swimmingly! Once again, quite a few highlights, the most prominent of them however was not reflected on the track--the hushed whispers about how much our student-athletes (and program) has grown in a positive direction in the past few years. It is great to see the student-athletes rising to the occasion and putting forth Athena's best face with positive and supportive behavior.

Some key performances were:
  • The Boys 4x200m relay winning the day--and even more impressively, it was the B relay! Julio Santos, Treyvond Jones, Tommy Love II and Sean Porrata ran string legs to pull away and win with an impressive time of 1:39.67! Though unreflected on the Section V leaderboard (because our "A" relay is #2), in Section V class A our "B" Relay would be seeded fifth in Sectionals--IMPRESSIVE!
  • Junior Keith Pease WON the 1000m by running up from the second heat with a blistering 2:37.69, only hundredths of a second off the school record! Senior Mintesinot Kassu also came to play running a strong 2:41.10! Both Keith now finds himself seeded in the top five of both this and the 1600m in Section V Class A!
  • Senior Brittany Ward PR'd in the 1500m run, further solidifying her provisional qualifications for a possible Sectional championship slot.
  • The Athena Sprint Boys had 8 members run PRs in the 300m dash: John Hampton, Treyvond Jones, Julio Santos, Chris Bond, Alex Weigand, Ryan Camera, Mike Kephart, and Cameron Gross! Hard work paying off! Athena currently has five boys who have at least met the provisional qualifying time for this event!
  • Sophomores Ryan Camera and Mike Kephart also PR'd in the 55m dash!
  • Junior Casey Pollack unleashed a monster 29' 4 3/4" triple jump performance, placing ninth overall in her first competition in this event of the season!
  • D&C Athlete of the Week, junior Brian Smith ran the 600m run in an electrifying 1:25.48! Brian is now seeded THIRD IN ALL OF SECTION V in this event in addition to being #1 in the 55 and 300 meter dashes! (...and his time was two thousandths off the school record.)
Another tremendous week for our team across the board with even more examples of energy and effort to be seen on our team leaderboad (attached). Full results from the meet can be viewed at http://www.yentiming.com/results/2012/indoor/1-14-12-hws.htm.
